2019 Anime Movies: DanMachi, KonoSuba

(Originally posted on 2019-12-22)

So, this year, I added another personal anime “first” – I saw an anime movie in a theater. In fact, I saw two. Over the summer, I saw Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon: Arrow of the Orion, and then in the fall, I caught KonoSuba: Legend of Crimson.

Arrow of the Orion

Arrow of the Orion is a non-canon sidestory in which Bell, Hestia, and The Gang, plus Hermes and a few other friends join Hestia’s old friend Artemis to re-seal an ancient evil.

I went to see the movie with my friend at the Fathom Events presentation at the local megaplex theater in the mall… where it was tucked away in one of the out-of-the way screens on a different level, and there were maybe 20 people total there. We had a good time, and got to see some interviews with the English dub cast, which I suppose was nice, although we got the subs.

The movie was a fun little jaunt. Had the typical DanMachi humor and flare, and I was extra amused that in a night camping scene with Hestia and Artemis, Hestia was actually the one more conservatively dressed 😉

Legend of Crimson

I hadn’t originally planned on going to see Legend of Crimson. I saw DanMachi due to my wife and son being out of town visiting relatives. But then my friend and I discovered that the local Movie Tavern was showing the movie, and my wife and son and I all went with my friend to see it. The movie was great, but bringing my son… may not have been the best plan, as he’s old enough to catch some of the subs, but not quite to get some of the more… adult humor that was involved.

Prior to the movie, we got a few minutes of Jun Fukushima (Kazuma) and Rie Takahashi (Megumin) discussing the movie and their characters’ progressions in it.

Unlike DanMachi, I believe the KonoSuba movie is canon. A visit to Megumin and YunYun’s home village of Crimson Demons, a whole town of chuunis, suddenly threatened by one of the Demon King’s generals. Some of the humor as I mentioned was a bit more adult, but fortunately, most of the time my son was distracted with eating and messing about with the reclining chair. In the meantime, we got the biggest Explosions yet, and a wonderfully flustered YunYun to start things off (flustered Aki Toyosaki voice is best voice). Only thing missing was more Eris (pads her chest) than a couple-second cameo ;p

I wasn’t able to get to the Fate: Heaven’s Feel movie(s), or Studio Trigger’s Promare this year, but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on things in 2020 to see what I might be able to catch…

A reminder: This is part of my 12 Days of AniTAY 2019.
