How to Write a Post in 7 Easy Steps!

  1. Click the +New button at the top of the page. You have the option to post posts, pages, or media. 99.9% of the time just click Post. Funny story, after 24 hours this tutorial is almost entirely not correct. Similarly to kinja now the compose post option is found under your user menu. The wp admin bar looked cheesy so we removed it.
  2. You’re now presented with the default wordpress text editor. The first thing you’ll want to do is click where it says Add Title and do so. Next, navigate to the sidebar where it says category and check off any categories that fit your topic. Finally you can start typing!
  3. WordPress uses Blocks which you can use to insert different types of media into your article. If you click the black box with a plus sign in it you’re given some of the more common options to create blocks. You may need to click outside the block you’re currently working on to see it. While it looks like these are pretty basic, you’ll be amazed when you click Browse all and get a good look at everything you can put in a block. Type or embed or insert images (pro tip: you can also add images inside a text box as an inline image. If you want to give Elementor a try, it’s a very powerful but more advanced editor. It works off the same principals as the basic editor but has different options.a step by step image of how to make a post
  4. Once you’re done making a post you’re going to be tempted to immediately hit publish but there are a few things to consider first. First, any tags you may want to assign to the post. Tags work exactly the same as they did on kinja so if you want to easily find a post series, make sure to tag it!
  5. Next “set featured image” If you want an image to show on the front page then you need to set a featured image from your post here. If you don’t set this only your title and the first few lines of text will show. Update: Nova can correct me if I’m wrong, but theoretically this should be automated. You can still select your featured image and it will override the automatically selected one.
  6. If your first few lines of text are very dry or don’t set up the post well, you can set an excerpt. Excerpts will show up on the front page under your title instead of your first few lines of text. You can leave everything else alone for now. the last image in a set
  7. Publish. You did it!!!
