My Favorite [Anime] Christmas Episodes

Yes, another GabDrop cap.

(Originally posted 2018-12-25)

I thought I’d wrap up these 12 days, and celebrate Christmas Day proper, with some brief nods to a few of my favorite Christmas episodes in anime that I’ve seen.

(A reminder: This is part of my 12 Days of AniTAY 2018. Big thanks to Zarnyx for suggesting to go ahead and do it in mainline-TAY, and RedStripe118 for putting me on to the 12 Days of Anime idea in the first place.)

First, as you may have guessed from all the caps I’ve included throughout these 12 days, is Gabriel Dropout.

From HanaKana’s sadistic Raphael abusing Satania (again), to Saori Oonishi’s Lawful Good demon, and the general goofiness, it’s just a fun, fun episode.

Next up on my list is Hinako Note. An overall ‘meh’ series, that I once described as “come for the cute girls doing cute things, be puzzled by the inexplicable fan service”, in one episode, the girls put on the weirdest Christmas play.

Speaking of great Christmas plays, there was also Kobayashi-san chi no Maid Dragon’s dragon crew putting on a Christmas play for the local community.

In the more serious/heartwarming sides of Christmas shows, there’s both the cute Gakuen Babysitters episode, as well as the pair of episodes in Nisekoi: where Chitoge comes to a closer relationship with her mother.

Club Christmas activities are both represented in one of my favorite shows, Invaders of the Rokujyouma?!, and in one of my new all-time favorites, Yuru Camp. The former features a club (and friends) party, while the latter is comfy Christmas camping, with a buzzed faculty advisor thrown in for good measure.

I keep forgetting how early SAO’s original Christmas episode was (“The Red-Nosed Reindeer”, episode 3), but it was definitely memorable (going to fight Santa Claus? and poor Sachi).

The girls from K-On! had a wonderful Christmas party at Ui & Yui’s home, eventually crashed by Sawa-chan.

And finally, who could forget Haruhi-chan’s Christmas party?

With Taniguchi being turned into Santa, and general Haruhi craziness… I’d almost forgotten this wasn’t in the main series itself.

Anyway, thanks for reading along with my 12 Days of AniTAY. I hope at least one of these articles was as interesting for you to read as they were for me to try and write up. I hope you and all of those you hold dear have a wonderful, Merry Christmas, or happy holidays, or enjoy however/whatever you celebrate this time of year.
