Open Forum: Clearing Space for the Rhombus

One of the things that gets in the way of playing games on VR is the setup. That’s been simplified a bit, from what I understand, with wireless, stand-alone sets like the Oculus Quest. I don’t have one of those. I have a PSVR that I got on sale in 2018, which is good enough for just about all the VR games that I care to play. I don’t keep the thing plugged in all the time, so most of the time if there’s a VR game that I want to play I have to connect it to the breakout box, clear away the coffee table, make sure a PS4 controller is charged, etc.

I’ve wanted to finish Psychonauts and the Rhombus of Ruin for a while, since I want to move on to Psychonauts 2. I’m a recent fan of the series, since I only finished the first one last year (which posed a tech issue in itself, since the Mac port is barely functional out of the box). I played through the first sequence of Rhombus earlier this year and found it to be a fun blend of VR and a Double Fine adventure game. It has a really smart in-game explanation for VR teleporting-as-player-movement in the use of Raz’ clairvoyance.

But there’s one more hurdle to my VR setup: in moving things around my apartment, I almost inevitably notice that I need to clean. I have a dog whose hair fuzzes up the living room carpet (and everything else) even though she has short hair. The shelf that the PSVR is on gathers dust. Ugh. So one fairly deep clean of my apartment later, I was ready to play.

And you know what? It was a double bonus. Now I have a much cleaner apartment and I finished a quick VR puzzle game with Psychonauts’ signature flair.
