Streaming Guide: How to Stream on Mobile using Discord

Overview

Discord has become ubiquitous in the gaming arena.  While it is excellent for chatting, it can also allow you to broadcast mobile games, share your screen, or video stream.

You Will Need

  1. A mobile phone capable of running Discord with functional front or rear facing cameras.
  2. Discord, available from
    1. Google Play
    2. Apple Store

Let’s Get Started

Video Chat

  1. Download and install Discord from your store of choice
  2. Open Discord
  3. Join a voice channel on the server you wish to stream to
  4. click the “Video” icon

Game Streaming/Screen Sharing

  1. Download and install Discord.
  2. Close all open apps.  In Android this is accomplished by clicking the “show apps” button (for me it is three vertical lines in the bottom left corner) and then clicking “close all” or follow your phone manufacturers instructions.  On Apple phone swipe up on your home screen and then one by one close your apps.  There is no close all button on Apple, but you can drag more than one of the open apps upwards to close them so you can do 3 at a time.
    1. Screen sharing does not differentiate between important, confidential information, and what you’re trying to show.  Protect yourself by closing all apps unrelated to what you wish to stream.
  3. Open Discord and join a voice channel in the server you wish to stream to.  Click “screen share”.  Depending on your phone orientation you may need to swipe up to show the option. If the option doesn’t exist your permission levels may not allow you to stream in that server.  You can check this by creating your own server where you are admin and attempting to stream.  If you still can’t, you may need to update your Discord version, or your phone may not support video streaming.  You can join our Guilded support server with any questions.
  4. A dialogue box will appear, accept the warning.  You’re now screen sharing.  Open your game and you’re good to go.
  5. You may get asked to allow permission for the discord overlay.  The overlay will appear as a small button on your screen on top of what you’re playing.  You can use it to quickly end streams or control audio options.  In order to use the overlay you will need to scroll down the permission list and tick the box next to Discord.
  6. Keep in mind that these streams are not saved anywhere.  If you wish to screen record with audio you will need to use your screen recorder built into Android/Apple or download a third party app.
