Tay Open Forum – Dumb lazy entertainment.

Hiya Tay!

I’ve notice that I have gone back to a very delightful and also terrible habit. Watching game grumps on youtube. At the moment they are playing Dangonronpa. A game that I’ve played and enjoyed a lot. Warts and all. So watching their reactions to the crazy events within that game is amusing. But it has also started to make me watch a whole lot more Game grump videos in general. Not sure if I like it. I feel like I had a bad habit of wasting too much time with their videos before since it is pretty much an never ending amount of content these days. I wouldn’t say it is an addiction or anything. It just a bit lazy? I feel like a could have as much fun watching a documentary or a movie if I just spent some effort finding something I want to watch.

Strangely I never really feel this way when I am playing games. The only similar thing would be when back in the days when I was playing heartstone or World of warcraft. Grinding in those games is definitely dumb. Although it felt more like a sad addiction rather than the casual stupid fun I have with youtube videos. But otherwise I never really consider the games I play these days dumb. Vrchat might look dumb, because it is in some ways. But I do get a lot social interaction with it and other multiplayer games that would otherwise be a very lonely year. So I wouldn’t say what I do in it is dumb.

Anyway, here are some suggested topics for today:

  • What would you consider dumb lazy entertainment? And what within that do you enjoy doing at the moment?
  • Mention a game that you played a lot that you feel nothing for these days.
  • Or talk about anything.

Ugh I know that feeling all too well. I feel like I missed a huge chunk of gaming history because I spent an entire console generation (PS2 era) playing DOTA and DOTA 2. I'm STILL playing catch up!

I don't watch YouTube personalities because I'm an old man who thinks the idea of watching someone else's opinion on stuff in order to make them rich, is the most ridiculous thing in the world. I'd rather form my own opinion. It's free and then I don't have to worry about YouTube's algorithm brainwashing me into a nazi either.

@peepso_user_37(Slinker) Sorry! re-reading it I realize it was pretty harsh. The nazi line is a reference to how YouTube's algorithm ends up suggesting far right conspiracy content over time. That part wasn't directed towards you at all.

I use YouTube a lot for cooking videos and DIY stuff. I guess I'm a little bitter that someone can go online and play video games and be loud and scream and then make a lot of money. So it's more my own feelings of inadequacy for not being able to do that rather than any real animosity towards the people based on who they are (even though some are pretty awful like Jake Paul and Pewdiepie). Whatever entertainment venue a person chooses to pursue they shouldn't be made to feel bad for it. I sincerely apologize that was really crappy of me. I need to re-read my thoughts before i just smash "post"
A new study suggests what we’ve suspected for years is right: YouTube is a pipeline for extremism and hate. How do we know that? More than 330,000 videos on nearly 350 YouTube channels were analyzed and manually classified according to a system designed by the Anti-Defamation League. They were labeled as either media (or what…

@peepso_user_20(Aikage) No worries. As I said, didn't think it was intended.

Yeah. I feel like a victim of youtubes bad algorithm at a time. For me personally it has gotten a lot better at not suggesting me bad stuff. Might be because I am pretty good at reporting stuff I am not interested in. So might be helping the algorithm. But for while that it seemed like youtube thought I really hated women.

Speaking of. I REALLY recommend this video about the subject. It begins as a video about flat earth. But the twist is that it is more about Q anon because both conspiracies grew under similar circumstances. Also a good way to point out there is also some good stuff out there. 🙂

Dumb entertainment can be so great. I'm not sure I like dumb and lazy entertainment but dumb on it's own is something I can get behind. Things like the Fast & Furious franchise is just so ridiculous but so entertaining at the same time. Popcorn cinema is a great escape.

A bunch of shooters kind of fall in to this too. Dumb mindless fun killing enemies and making me feel like a bad ass super soldier.

I'm like halfway through AWE in Control and I'm happy I played Alan Wake first. I'm sure I wouldn't like it half as much if I didn't do that.

Also Bioshock on Switch looks and plays great. I can't believe you can play games like these on portable consoles now. We're living in the future.

@peepso_user_35(RealmofDarthon) Yo RealmofDarthon!

I've actually never watched a Fast & Furious movies. But I am not that interested in cars. But I get the same feeling when I watch the Marvel movies on cinema. I mean there are some genuine good ones like Guardians of the Galaxy. But overall I watch them because they were an easy pick that friends could agree to watch. Before Covid-19 I tried to watch more none-disney movies. I think the last movie I watched was "Lighthouse". Which certainly was not dumb. XD

Yeah, I was thinking of mentioning Doom there. But I didn't enjoy Doom: Eternal that much. Both Doom 2016 and that one kinda stress me out. Like when you are playing them on hard difficulty they require a lot of you. So I can't really call it brainless activity. Although I can see people playing it on easy or normal just to spend some time.

Oh yeah. I remember you mentioning that you were playing those games. Glad you enjoy it. Really need to play control at some point.

Also should get switch. XD

@peepso_user_37(Slinker) Doom is such a stressful game. I can play an hour of it at a time at most before needing a break while with most other games there really isn't a kind of "limit" like with this. It's not a relaxing game by any means. Shoot everything that moves usually isn't too crazy but Doom changes the game.

Also The Lighthouse is on my list of things to watch. Hope it was good!
