TAY2: Open Forum – Under Pressure

“Under Pressure” – Crash Bandicoot 3

Don’t you hate deadlines? Time pressure can be one of the most uncomfortable kinds of pressure to experience, both in video games and in life.

It’s the last round, you’re the last one alive and the clock is ticking. The terrorists have planted, and you have to take out the remaining enemies and defuse the bomb.

You’re so close to breaking that high score, even a single mistake could spell doom for this attempt. The clock is ticking. Every. Second. Counts.

It might be uncomfortable, but sometimes the most amazing things happen under this kind of pressure. Some of my most memorable and exhilarating moments have happened in the last few seconds of a round or level.

Life can also be this way. I dislike working to deadlines, but it’s always so satisfying when things go according to plan. Sometimes things don’t exactly go as planned, but it feels amazing when you use all of your resources to pull a rabbit out of a hat and everything works out in the end.

That’s basically what I want to talk about in this forum, so have at it in the comments!

  • How do you handle pressure?
  • Tell me about the most stressful and rewarding moment you can think of in gaming, off the top of your head?
  • The most disappointing moment you can think of in gaming, for example that time you almost got the high score?
  • As always, feel free to Talk Amongst Yourselves!

Definitely think I handle pressure pretty well. I used to work best under deadlines when I was writing papers in college. I'd try to start writing them ahead of time but I just would always write better and faster with a sooner deadline. I think I'm a little better with things now. Try to make a list of things that need to be done and check things off as I go. Try to get some easy ones out of the way to make the list smaller - that always makes me feel better. Like I'm making progress.

I'm 30 hours deep in to Cyberpunk 2077 and it's still awesome. Not a lot of gaming time currently so slowly making progress but I'd love to have like a weekend to just play it a ton. I beat Toree 3D this past weekend. Such a nice quick little 3D platformer.

@peepso_user_7(OptionalObjectives) I'm definitely down for some Toree 3D 2. That's a perfect description of the first one.

I love stressful games, they are cathartic. The more stressful the better in my opinion.

Alien: Isolation on Nightmare difficulty was the most stressful and most rewarding game experience for me. I had chest pains for much of the game...that's how tense it was. 🙂

I can't think of a specific incident, but most of my gaming disappointment comes from final bosses that are way over the top in terms of difficulty. I usually play on the higher difficulties in games so I expect bosses to be tough, but many are just poorly designed and scale badly with the higher difficulties. There have definitely been a few times where I've had to look up a tip or strategy to beat a boss because 30 times with the same boss can get old. 🙂

@peepso_user_15(Datacide) I don’t think I’d be able to play a game that gave me chest pains! Maybe a bit too stressful for my life..

30 times with the same boss sounds like my experience with Dark Souls in the beginning. I love a good boss, I remember creaming the Mirror Knight in DS2 and then on another play through with a different build I gave up after a while.
