As a side hobby to my games hobby, I like trading them online. Last week, I had the unusual opportunity to trade a few games for some hardware, and now I’m the proud owner of a midnight purple 3DS. It joins my tank-like, electrically-taped, first-gen DS. Between that and my Switch, I have uninterrupted access to handheld Nintendo games from the GBA to the present.
Naturally, I had some games that I immediately wanted to pick up. Kirby: Planet Robobot, Metroid: Samus Returns, and Kid Icarus: Uprising were at the top of the list. Ninty was big on “Series Title: Subtitle” for this one, eh?
All of those are in the mail, though, as well as Ridge Racer. The only game to arrive at the same time as the little flip-book console was Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy. And y’know what? It’s good. Having played a few missions of Ace Combat 7 (look, a numbered entry!), playing this remake of Ace Combat 2 feels surprisingly up-to-date.
There are a few things that I wish the series would ditch, of course. Does anyone really care if a game that pretty much takes place in Fire Emblem land, but with fighter jets and drones, has officially licensed aircraft? Bamco’s reasoning here is beyond me. There’s no need to pay Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin for the image rights to the F-22 or whatever. If Monster energy drinks in Death Stranding count as “brand vandalism,” surely this is worse. It’s not like the military-industrial complex needs the money.

Story of Season, Return to Popolo Crois a Story of Seasons Fairytale, Radiant Historia, Megaman ZX and ZX Advent, Dragon COde VFD, maybe Bravely default and Bravely second, Pokemon X/Y or Alpha Sapphire or Omega Ruby, And if you like Final fantasy music Theatrythm is good.
I love my 3DS. So many good games on the system. I just grabbed mine and i'll go through my activity log and see what I put a ton of hours into. Animal Crossing New Leaf (unless you're not into this type of game or have the Switch one already). Any of the Fire Emblem games. I love this series. Fire Emblem Awakening is my favorite though. Any of the Pokemon games are awesome. My longest play time is with Black on here which is only 6 more minutes than Black Version 2. Pokemon Conquest is a nice blend of Pokemon and a Fire Emblem type game. Mario & Luigi games are fun. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars is another strategy game like Fire Emblem. I got really into this type of game on 3DS. The Zero Escape series is fantastics. 999 Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors to start with. Super Mario 3D Land is decent. Ultimae NES Remix and Super Smash Bros are both fun.
