Open Forum: Play it again, Pearl and Marina

This open forum is a sequel. Last week, I expressed some frustration about GT Sport‘s online multiplayer. Meanwhile, in my hobby-within-a-hobby of swapping games with strangers through the mail, someone had a copy of Splatoon 2. Thinking about it, I remembered that I had more fun with the kids/squids/octolings than most online competitive games. So Splatoon 2 gained entry into a rare echelon of games: those that I’ve played, considered myself done with, swapped, and then later were welcomed back into my game collection. I think only Demon’s Souls, 3D Dot Game Heroes, and Yakuza 3 have previously had the honor.

Anyway, I was able to hop back in to Inkopolis and its assorted battlefields last night and… yep, this game just does so much right. Lobbies fill quickly, matchmaking isn’t too busted, and most of the games are pretty even. The mechanics still sparkle – everything is just so well integrated. That paint is linked to ammo, to charging one’s special, to movement, to the score at the end of the game. The style is still interesting, too. Oh, and of course, the controller + gyro support is at its best here. It’s shocking to me that more games don’t take how Splatoon controls and moves, straight up.

Talk Amongst Yourselves!

  • What’s a game you’ve put down, thinking that it was for good, only to go back to it?
  • Controllers and gyro – I know you have an opinion.
  • Sneakers: all the cool inklings love a good pair. You?

In the single-player space, the most recent game that I'd taken up again after a long period away was Dead Cells. I found it a bit annoying, however, that with numerous patches/updates happening in between that hiatus, I was running up against new enemies in stages that I had played endless times before. Not the best thing to have no warnings about! Those gameplay fundamentals, though...they're still soooooo good each time I come back to them.

In the multiplayer space, the game I'd most recently returned to was Rocket League. I think Splatoon 2 could be a nice return as well, but the thought of doing so makes me rather nervous, with fears that maybe I've been left in the dust during all that time away. Seeing from your experiences that getting back in seems smooth, however, is encouraging.

Controllers and gyro, if done effectively, are for sure excellent. The Splatoon games are of course the gold standard, but I also like how it's implemented in the Switch version of Risk of Rain 2. There could just be something about third-person shooter control schemes that fit the gyro controls to a tee.

I've never been much of a shoes guy, but for the last few years that I've been buying them, I do at least try to go for something decently stylish. On the sneaker side, my pair of Pumas is both super comfortable and great on walks and other outdoorsy things. For more general shoes, meanwhile, I'm really digging the Vans that I picked up along with said Pumas; I like wearing them for non-outdoors things like getting take-out or shopping.

And here are said shoes, which stubbornly refused to upload before.

**What’s a game you’ve put down, thinking that it was for good, only to go back to it?**
Hm this is a hard question. Typically once I put a game down for good then I'm really done with it. Maybe Skyrim? I actually just started the Xbox One upgraded version a few days ago after not playing the Xbox 360 version forever since it wasn't backwards compatible.

**Controllers and gyro – I know you have an opinion.**
They are fine I guess. I have a Switch lite but haven't really used gyro controls for anything other than a bit of Breath of the Wild.

I usually go for comfortable shoes. Right now I've been wearing the Brooks shoes I bought for running which became impossible right after getting them since the pandemic started and you really didn't want to be outside in the city then. Usually I would wear some Nike's or something before that. Nothing super fancy but decent shoes. It helped that there was a Nike outlet in my hometown so whenever I was back to visit then I would grab a new pair if I needed one.
