TAY: Open Forum – Looking Forward

Well…somehow, we made it. It’s December 31, the 366th–and final day–of the year. Yeah, you read that right, and it’s no typo: This year did, in fact, consist of 366 days instead of the usual 365 in most other years, yet that extra day is still somehow the least important factor into 2020 feeling like it went on for-fucking-ever.

Did anyone else completely forget that 2020 was a leap year?! Or is it just me? Though even if it was just me, who could blame me? February 29 fell during the before times! It’s a miracle I’m even remembering it at the very end! In much the same way that it’s a miracle that I’m remembering anything about this year at all, perhaps. There are times where I’d rather just forget it all, honestly.

You don’t get to be remembered as a “good year” when you’re a time where I had to say my goodbyes to one of my cats, that’s all I’m saying.

So I’m done looking back. Time to look forward instead. Granted, not to anything big and exciting in the world, as that promises to continue being a hellscape for the foreseeable future. Instead, it’s all about all of the new videogames, recently added to the collection, that will help to start carrying us into the new year! I got a surprisingly robust number of them this month without even planning on it.

First up was a physical Switch copy of Risk of Rain 2, which was a most pleasant surprise. Until seeing there on the shelf, I hadn’t realized that it came out for the Switch, let alone that there were physical copies being made for it. I only played the first one extremely briefly, and it wasn’t much my bag, but seeing a Vinesauce stream for this third-person shooter kind of sequel a while back got me mightily interested in checking it out. And now I did, and that’s been a great call thus far, because it’s a (brutally punishing) blast! And it comes bundled with the original Risk of Rain as well, so I’ve even got an ideal way to re-check that one out if I so desired.

Another nice surprise? Essentially being a sort of Christmas gift that was not expected whatsoever? I was gifted a Steam code for Indivisible by TAY! My last Open Forum got designated as a place where people who participated had a chance at winning a free copy of the action RPG, and at the time I thought, “Oh, cool! One of the commenters is going to be getting something nice!” Apparently, however, I guess being the Open Forum author technically meant that you were also in the running?! I’ll be honest, I did not think there was a chance it would ever go to me.

Not that I’m complaining. Indivisible was another game that I was pretty interested in but had not fully made the jump to getting. And now I don’t need to make that jump, because it’s been practically made for me instead! I’ve only just gotten past some of the tutorial stuff thus far, but it’s already shaping up to be something cool, if also a little daunting.

Finally, just a couple of days ago, I got Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. This joins the esteemed annals of games like the Injustice series or the NetherRealm Stuidos Mortal Kombat reboots where the main draw is playing through the story mode. Which is, yes, the dumbest possible reason for getting a crossover puzzle game, but the original game’s story such a spectacularly, raucously dumb time that was way more hilarious than it had any right to be. Promising me more of that?? Sign me up!!!

Plus, I have a desperate need to see if they’re going to do anything to progress my Puyo Puyo Tetris ship, i.e. Ringo and their anthropomorphisation of the T piece. I acknowledge that I just wrote that prior sentence in all earnestness, and I am standing by it.

Today’s questions:

  • What new games have you gotten recently–whether just before, during, or after all of the winter gift-giving holidays–that will help to ring in the new year?
  • Do you have any resolutions and hopes about how you’ll be approaching 2021?

Love Thundercat. Nice. I got AC Valhalla, but I don't really feel like jumping in right now. I'd prefer to play it on next gen if I can get my hands on one soon.

@peepso_user_44(HyConnor) I only started listening to anything from Thundercat this year. Turns out I'd been missing out on some good shit the past several years. He's absolutely someone I've got to seek out more from.

Hopefully a next-gen console in your hands is not that far off from now. Fingers crossed! I've never been an AC person, but I've heard good things about Valhalla, and I hope it delivers for you accordingly.
