TAY: Open Forum – Official Teaser Trailer (2022) Chris Evans

Thumbnail and video title for the Lightyear teaser trailer uploaded by IGN, titled Lightyear - "Official Teaser Trailer (2022) Chris Evans"

So!! A Buzz Lightyear (origin?) movie! Yup, as in the space toy from Toy Story, but it’s going to be literally about the character behind the toy rather than the toy! And it’s gotten a big announcement rollout, even going so far as to have a dramatic “gravitas”-filled trailer-fied remix version of David Bowie’s “Starman”!

Before yesterday, everything written above would have been some broad Onion-style satire. Yet all of this is, in fact, 100% real.

The detail about all of this that has me the most tickled, randomly enough, is that when IGN uploaded the trailer on their YouTube channel, they decided to throw Chris Evans’ name at the end of the video title. Even when aware of the context that he’s the new voice of Buzz, it still looks too non-sequitur to not be funny. The same kind of funny as how Buzz’s comically smooth, oversized chin remains unchanged despite *waves arms and hands wildly* the rest of the art style around him, so it just sticks out that much more.

Despite all of that, though, here’s the real kicker: Having seen the trailer, I think this looks…potentially pretty fun, and kind of cool?? The roots of this project might be fundamentally dumb and so deep into the franchise-itis rabbit hole, but even circumstances like that still might leave room for good, solid execution. Fingers crossed.

Today’s questions:

  • Are you getting tired of all this franchise/IP expansion media, or has it overall served you well?
  • What is a spinoff/prequel/other type of franchise expansion whose existence would be totally unnecessary, yet you’d still want anyway?
  • Related to stuff like this, as well as the continuation of Shocktober, there’s an ongoing Chucky TV show based on the long-running film series, and my wife–reacquainting herself with the movies given to the spooky season–has been quite liking it so far? Anyone else been keeping up with it as well?

And, as always, Talk Amongst Yourselves!
