TAY: Open Forum – The Competitive Spirit

It’s been…a pretty fun week so far! The TAY2 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament began in earnest on Monday, in which I’ve been taking part. I’ve not had many reasons to revisit Smash over the past few years, but this has proven to be an excellent one; turns out it can be quite the gripping competitive experience, who’d have thought? Plus, as of last night, I’m still somehow in it??

My experience with tournament-related events of any sort are few and far between. A couple of taekwondo meets back when I did that as a little preteen kid, a couple of quiz bowl meets as part of my high school’s academic competition team club–neither of which I could really boast of much victory, but which I quite enjoyed. As far as prior videogame competitions specifically, my then-girlfriend/now-wife and I took part in a Puyo Puyo Tetris swap mode tournament held at a convention, where I (somehow) got to the semifinals and she was a finalist. That was an especially lovely time as well!

Now I can also add a little bit of competitive Smash to that resume. This is my first time in a remotely-run tournament, and it’s pretty interesting getting a taste of the new age in that way. I believe this is also my first time actually, y’know, playing videogames with this videogame community, so it’s been especially gratifying getting to share in that with you all as well. Here’s to keeping that momentum going!

Today’s questions:

  • What tournaments and competitions have you been a part of, in your current life or in past lives?
  • If TAY2 was to run more events like this Smash tournament, what other videogames would be good to do?
  • Have you seen that Zack Snyder’s Justice League? What did you think?

And, as always, Talk Amongst Yourselves!

Today’s Morning Jam, brought to you by my wife very recently beginning to go through Pokemon Sword, where it turns out the gym battles are just ABSURDLY HYPE like they have STADIUM AUDIENCE CHANT SINGING???

**What tournaments and competitions have you been a part of, in your current life or in past lives?**
Played in a lot of sports tournaments growing up between soccer and basketball. A soccer tournament here and there as an adult. Never been much for competitive multiplayer video games since the culture around then is always so toxic. I'll play with my friends but random people always seem to have some people who are jerks.

For Switch I have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe so I'd be up for something like that. Or Rocket League maybe? Lot of close platform support there.

I have not yet but hopefully this weekend. I'm hyped for it! It's gotten some pretty decent reviews from what I've seen so I'm trying to stay cautiously optimistic. Just need to find 4 hours to set aside for this. I may end up doing it in chunks since I hear it's kind of divided that way though.

I'm sucked in to Assassin's Creed II. It's such a scaled back game after playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey previously but it's been fun. Took a bit to get back into the way it controls since I'm used to the newer control style but I think I have the hang of it now. Story is pretty good but I hear that II is one of the high points for the series so that isn't surprising. I was going to try and bounce between this and Crysis but I think this has my full attention now especially after having a bit of trouble in Crysis where I had to do a section over more than 5 times before defeating these enemies.

As someone who sucks at Smash and may get last place, I think we should make the Smash thing Semi annual or something. Give the group something to train up to!

Aside from that, Fifa or Madden would be fun, but possibly harder to pull together. Pokemon?

I have not watched it yet. I didn't like Batman v. Superman or Aquaman, so I am not just that invested in the DCU, especially since they are just rebooting it.
