TAY2: Open Forum – Snowfall and Such

A snowy scene across a body of water--maybe a river

A couple of days ago, right before November ended, we got our first sight of snow. Not like the picture above, for better or worse–after becoming a car owner with adult responsibilities and shit, I have a lot more “worse” in my point of view–but instead quite possibly the lightest, thinnest dusting of snowflakes I’d ever witnessed. You couldn’t even classify the weather event as a flurry, and could just barely even be classified as an event at that; such was the totality of the snow’s weakness.

Yet weak or not, it’s still a sign that winter is around the corner. It’s funny to think that winter used to be my favorite of the four seasons. These days, that honor tends to go to fall…which is frustrating when so many fall days tend to be too warm or too frigid to properly feel like the season. I swear that consistent autumn weather used to be a thing back in the day!! Right?!

Also around the corner: The December holiday season. The participating radio stations have already switched to all Christmas/holiday music programming, all the time. Actually, one of the stations switched to it way earlier, like a week-plus before Thanksgiving, which annoys me to no end. There’s a time for all things, so could everyone please exercise a little patience and hold off going full-on holiday cheer mode? What irks me the most about this time, as a music lover, isn’t even the prevalence of Christmas, but how they run a narrow subset of songs thoroughly into the ground by sheer force of overplay. I’ve got a playlist of holiday songs that I build on every once in a while, where I have the freedom to include and emphasize songs more off the beaten path, and you know what? It’s wholly pleasant!

Finally, in the last bit of exciting (not actually exciting) news, I recently watched You Only Live Twice. That therefore caps off the initial five-film run of Sean Connery’s tenure as James Bond! A minor milestone! The movie itself was…kind of alright, I guess. But it’s the first time in this chronological series viewing where I occasionally doubted if I was having a good time.

For posterity’s sake, here’s my as-of-now ranking of the 007 series’ beginning entries, from most favorite to least:

  1. From Russia with Love
  2. Dr. No
  3. Thunderball
  4. Goldfinger
  5. You Only Live Twice

Turns out that I have an especially strong affinity for Terence Young’s efforts, apparently.

Should I continue with this series, I’ll be seeing a new actor take on the James Bond role for the first time. In all honesty, that’s looking pretty likely; I’ve heard good things about On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

That’s all I’ve got for today. If you’ve found yourself here, I implore you to chime in and Talk Amongst Yourselves. But far more important than that, I hope that you have a good day today!
