TAY2: Open Forum – The Choices We Make

Hello TAY, it’s been a couple weeks since I have done this Monday Forum, but you can believe that not a single week goes by where I don’t think about it.

That’s what has inspired this forum. Sometimes, I have a lot going on and can’t really squeeze in writing an OF. Sometimes, this happens a few weeks in a row. It might be work or personal stuff, sometimes it might just be that I am playing a game and don’t want to tear myself away from it.

Like many other people, I have picked up Elden Ring. I have got to say it is one of the most amazing games I have ever played! Unfortunately, I have not played as much as I would like but this has been because I have had other things going on, both good and bad, that have made me think, “This game isn’t going anywhere, I need to do X instead. I’ll play when I have more downtime.”

I have often written about my appreciation for more bite-sized games of late, that might take me 8-10 hours to complete. They are memorable, yet fleeting, like a one night stand. Games like Elden Ring are far fewer – something grand, requiring a deeper understanding of it’s nuances. With so many things to learn, and so much to do, you can spend weeks or months chipping away at it.

In the end, a game like this leaves a far greater impression with it’s complex world building, lore and atmospheric storytelling – but only if you’re up to the task of diving into it and really getting to know it’s depths and secrets. Whether you can or not, is something only you can decide once you take into account your personal limitations, whether it be a simple lack of time or perhaps you have already committed to playing another game that fits your personal tastes more.

With that, let’s get to some questions –

  • Would you rather play 10 great short games of 8 hours each, or spend that time on a more ambitious title that suits your tastes?
  • Have you played Elden Ring? Thoughts? Are you planning to pick it up?
  • Name a game coming out in the near future that you would rather play than Elden Ring? An example – I skipped out on several games, including Pokemon Legends: Arceus.
  • As always, feel free to Talk Amongst Yourselves!

I think I just don't have the time any more to play super enormous games like that. I have Witcher 3 sitting around waiting to be played but I'm hesitant to start it due to knowing how long it'll take to complete. At some point I just need to go for it. I've typically been drawn to shorter games recently. I did just start 2 new games though that I got from the library. A short game in Call of Duty: Vanguard and a longer one in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Nice to have one of each to play at the same time especially when they are on different systems. Not sure I'll play Elden Ring just because of the level of difficulty I hear it has. I'm not typically into games that like to kick my ass.
